Happy New Year, ladies & gents!
I have a feeling 2016 is going to be a good one – what do you reckon?
In fact, I’m sure it will be. You deserve it!
I love New Year’s! I love reflecting on the previous & setting goals to improve my life & myself ( read: buying a whole lot of organisations stuff that I may or may not use…). There is just one problem.
When I get excited, invigorated etc I also get serious anxiety. I’m not 100% sure why, but it probably has something to do with old habits my brain holds on to. You know, to stop me being disappointed if what I’m looking forward to doesn’t happen. Old dogs, new tricks come to mind…
So, throughout January, I make sure to schedule PLENTY of me time for yoga & meditation & diary writing. Anyone else do the diary thing? I’ve been neglecting it over Christmas, but it helps heaps with my anxiety (shall I do a post?).
Today, I want to talk to you about deep belly breathing. I feel as though so many people tout on about being happy ( including me, btw! ) & yoga & meditation & mindfulness – you get the jist. Deep belly breathing is where all of this begins.
How do you do deep belly breathing? Easy.
> Sit somewhere comfortable, preferably where you won’t be disturbed for a few mins ( the loo works wonders for me when I’m in the office)
> Focus on your belly area – not the chestConcentrate on your breathing until you notice your belly is rising more noticeably than your chest
> Breath in through your nose, hold for a few seconds & then exhale through your mouth
Try placing one hand on your chest & the other on your belly to help you recognise when one is rising more than the other. Another good tip is to try & clear your mind of thoughts when you do it. If something keeps popping up, though, it could be for a reason ( this needs to be a whole separate post too ).
Immediate stress relief, instant boost in energy levels, elevated mood & long lasting physiological benefits. Sounds like a no-brainer to me, dontcha think? Try to be acutely aware of your breathing today. Consider it. Don’t just let it be a reflex.
Screw the juice fast or fad detox, just take a couple of deep long breaths to regenerate your body on a cellular level this Jan.
Ok, ok, tell me: what super go-to stress busters do you have up your sleeve? Any crazy ones that you know I would totally be in to?
Enjoy the first Monday of 2016 – OWN IT!
Ta ta for now – nmk, xo
